DURHAM, N.C. — A program in the Bull City is helping people remain in their homes.
The Low-Income Homeowners Relief Program was recently revamped, and eligibility now allows for more people to get help.
Patricia A. Murray recently took part in the program. She’s the owner of the Durham Skywriter, an online community newspaper. Since 2017, every day at noon, she delivers the news to her online audience from her bike.

“The media bug hit me in Chicago, my hometown. I had a paper called the Woodlawn Scoop, which eventually became the Southside Scoop. I just love sharing information," Murray said.
She provides resources for people to receive food, medical care or other programs, including ones she’s taken part in herself like the Durham Low-Income Homeowners Relief program.
“A lot of us don’t like to share that kind of information with people," Murray said. "The information I’m talking about is the fact that we are struggling. We don’t like to share that with people, but we are all people. We all struggle.”
Murray says she has grown roots here in North Carolina and wants to stay in her home as long as possible.
She’s grateful for the assistance and urges others who may need it to apply.
“If you are in trouble, need help, then turn to these programs, because they are there for us, to help us," Murray said.
