RALEIGH, N.C. – Raleigh police on Friday released recordings of a handful of 911 calls reporting the mass shooting Thursday evening in the city’s Hedingham community.

In harrowing accounts that came in around 5:15 p.m., callers describe a young man dressed in camouflage wielding a shotgun, hearing shots and screams and seeing victims on the ground near Osprey Cove Drive.

Five people were killed, including an off-duty police officer, in the shooting rampage that erupted near a popular recreational trail, the Neuse River Greenway Trail, in east Raleigh. A 15-year-old suspect was taken into custody hours after the attack and remained in hospital in critical condition Friday night.

The police have redacted information and altered audio of the 911 recordings to disguise the callers’ voices.
