CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Douglas International Airport will be temporarily closing the Airport Overlook and moving it as part of their ongoing enhancement project.
What You Need To Know
- Beginning Oct. 3, Airport Overlook Drive and the existing Long Term 1 exit will close permanently
- Passengers exiting Long Term Lot 1 will exit onto Beacon Drive and continue north to a signalized intersection at Wilkinson Boulevard
- Starting Oct. 8, the portion of Old Dowd Road between Marshall Drive and the roundabout on Rental Car Road, closes permanently
- A new Airport Overlook with new amenities is in the works
Crews will also close Airport Overlook Drive and the existing Long Term 1 exit, beginning Oct. 3. Drivers will instead exit onto Beacon Drive.
Later on Oct. 8, Old Dowd Road between Marshall Drive and the roundabout on Rental Car Road will also close permanently. A portion of Old Dowd Road will close for about two months.
Airport officials say a temporary Overlook will be made, so families and friends can still watch planes take off and land. That Overlook is nearly complete and is expected to open Oct. 17. Drivers will need to follow the posted signs to take Wilkinson Boulevard to Marshall Drive.
Designs are being worked on for a new-and-improved Airport Overlook that will feature better airfield, skyline and terminal views. When construction is completed, onlookers can expect modern amenities, paved parking and more space for food trucks. Officials haven’t currently announced a date or location.
