WILSON, N.C. — An N.C. Department of Transportation worker was fatally struck by a vehicle while she was working on the shoulder of a road Friday morning in Wilson County, the N.C. State Highway Patrol said.
The driver fled the scene but later was arrested, The Associated Press reported Saturday.
Anna Gavin Bradshaw, 60, of Wilson, was clearing storm debris on the shoulder of U.S. 264 Alternate at about 10:50 a.m. when a Honda Accord went off the road and hit her, the Highway Patrol said.
“Anna was a dedicated and hard-working employee in the Wilson County maintenance office and will be missed by her NCDOT family,” the Department of Transportation said in a statement.
Jamari Marquis Powell of Bailey was taken into custody late Friday and charged with felony hit and run in Bradshaw's death, the Highway Patrol said, according to The AP.
The governor offered his condolences Friday evening over Bradshaw’s death.
“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Anna Bradshaw,” Gov. Roy Cooper said in a tweet. “We’re grateful for her service to North Carolina, and our prayers are with her family, friends and NCDOT coworkers."
Wilson County is about 50 miles east of Raleigh.
