CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police charged the man they say shot a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer early Tuesday morning.
Toddrick Mcadden, 32, is charged with two counts each of attempted murder and assault on a law enforcement officer.
The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. in the 400 block of East 36th Street in NoDa. Police were responding to an altercation at The Blind Pig, CMPD said, that happened after a customer was asked to leave.
The department says the officer was shot in the leg and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
"There is no indication at this time officers returned fire," CMPD said in a tweet Tuesday.
The officer has been released and is resting at home, the department said in a release Wednesday. The officer involved in the incident has not been identified.
CMPD Police Chief Johnny Jennings released a video message following McFadden’s arrest, expressing disappointment in the bond amount and the “system.”
“I was astonished to see the bond results for Toddrick McFadden,” Jennings said in the video posted to YouTube. "He received a total of $170,000 bond for two counts of attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer and one count of shooting into an occupied property.”
Jennings said paying 10% of the bond equates to $17,000, in which McFadden could be released.
“So something’s definitely wrong with the system,” Jennings said.
The police chief said it’s “absolutely unacceptable” that someone can shoot someone, potentially ending their life, and be released back into the community.
“Your lives are worth a whole lot more than $17,000 to let someone back out on the streets,” Jennings said.
