Character, maturity, and respect for others are words used to describe the latest student to receive the Spectrum News1 High School Scholar of the Week award, which includes a $1,000 scholarship.

What You Need To Know

This week's High School Scholar award goes to an Asheville student, Tommy "Trey" Haney

Haney is a top student, varsity wrestler and dedicates time to the Asheville Humane Society

Haney says he plans to attend college right here in North Carolina

There’s Tommy Haney, the Varsity wrestler. And then there’s Tommy Haney, the stellar student. He’s known as “Trey” at Asheville’s Martin L. Nesbitt Discovery Academy.

“He’s just a great kid with a heart of service,” said Assistant Principal Josh Fisher, who’s known him since he was in middle school.

Fisher says Haney overcame any adversity that may have come along with attending a high school for advanced students.

“[I] certainly have seen him grow over the last six years, and I think that’s another reason why I truly have a real body of work and understanding of the type of person Trey is,” Fisher added.

It's also more than enough reason Fisher says to nominate the student, who has a 4.02 GPA for the High School Scholar of the Week award.

“This scholarship is quite competitive, and there are hundreds of applicants,” said N.C. Senator Julie Mayfield.

She represents the district where the school is located and was impressed by Haney’s accomplishments.

“It became clear to me that you have achieved the trifecta of what it takes to be a successful college applicant, and, I think, really successful in life,” Mayfield said.

That success is due, in part, to Haney's ability to be a well-rounded student.

“You’re a school ambassador and then of course the crowning jewel is the community service that you do at the Asheville Humane Society,”  Mayfield told Haney during the recent award presentation. “On behalf of Charter Communications and Spectrum News 1, it is my pleasure to announce you as the High School Scholar of the Week,” Mayfield stated.

The award announcement means a $1,000 scholarship that Haney plans to use right here in his home state.

“I’ve looked at N.C. State, Chapel Hill, ECU,” Trey said.

Trey remains humble, despite all the praise he's received.

“I try to be the best person I can day in and day out, and if other people admire that, then it’s awesome,” he said.
