DURHAM, N.C. — In the past, Terry Aitken would exercise by swimming or doing yoga.

But when the pandemic shut those activities down, she decided to try out a dance class with the Silver Shuffles since it was being held outdoors at the time.

What You Need To Know

The "Silver Shuffles" group consists of senior citizens

They typically perform at retirement centers

Multiple classes are available

“Since it really was the only game in town, I decided I’ve got to do something, so I showed up and the first class I took, I was hooked,” Aitken said.

Aitken has been dancing with the company for senior citizens ever since, and finds cutting a rug can actually be a balm for the soul. It offers everything from ballet to tap to jazz classes.

“I have suffered from depression," Aitken said. "I lost my husband two years back, and the isolation and even exercise, it was good for me and I could tell it made me better."

The seniors, mostly in their 60s and 70s, primarily perform at retirement centers but have also gotten some requests at assisted living centers.

“They are laughing, they are smiling," Aitken said when asked about audience response. "We just have a great time, so I just get joy out of it, I guess is the word.”

Joy for Terry and joy for those who have the honor of watching the Silver Shuffles in their element, proving no matter your age, sometimes dancing it out is all you need to turn your day around.
