RALEIGH, N.C. — Cold weather and icy conditions canceled the Martin Luther King Day march, but some activities went on.
Martin Luther King Day was Monday, and many celebrations were canceled due to winter weather
The John Chavis Community Center held a special celebration for Dr. King with activities, playing his speeches and serving cake
The center's director reminds people King wasn't always well-liked and celebrated, and that today's actions may not be honored but history will remember them differently
The John Chavis Community Center remembered Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by offering activities for kids, playing his speeches, sharing facts about his life and slicing some birthday cake.
Grady Bussey, the director of the community center, reminded those in attendance of how Dr. King was not always well-liked and celebrated the way he is today.
"In 1968, his approval rating was only 25%. Most of the country did not approve of works he was doing at that time," Bussey said. "Whereas today, we celebrate his legacy and his work towards non-violence and inclusiveness, at that time he was not a very popular person."
Bussey says that can be related to work we do in the community today.
"I think when we think about our own legacy and how we are going to be a contribution to our own society, remember we may not be able to see the just rewards today but years from now people can celebrate all the work that we do," Bussey said.
