Amelia Caison learned how to stitch plastic bags through watching YouTube videos

She had a stockpile of plastic bags after having her meals delivered

Her mats were recently on display at the Whitestone Fall Festival

Amelia Caison has always been avid recycler. She knows plastic bags don't completely break down in landfills and can become micro-plastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment.

Over the pandemic she had a stockpile of plastic bags after having her meals delivered to her from Whitestone, the senior living community she lives in. Caison decided to put her 50 years of stitching skills to the test and make floor mats out of the plastic bags she collected. 

"Well I’ve always like to recycle, and we had so many bags, and I wasn’t going out to the grocery store to recycle, so I thought, 'let me see what I can do,' and I had time on my hands since we weren’t doing anything so I just thought that might be a good project," Caison said. 

Caison's mats were recently on display at the Whitestone Fall Festival, where she also sold scarves, hot pads and dishcloths made out of recycled plastic.
