CHARLOTTE, N.C. — If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, the Charlotte Symphony is bringing old school jams to the Queen City with their Kings of Soul performance.

What You Need To Know

  • Michael Lynche joins the Charlotte Symphony for the Kings of Soul concert

  • Lynche says music is a universal language that everyone can speak

  • The two-night concert will include R&B and soul favorites, including Otis Redding and Smokey Robinson

Michael Lynche is one of the three Kings of Soul. You may remember him from season nine of "American Idol."

Lynche grew up in the church, both parents ordained ministers, with a family full of singers. But Lynche took a different life path.

“I was a black sheep of my family because I went to University of Florida. I played football,” Lynche said.

Eventually, he took his voice from the congregation to the national stage for season nine of "American Idol," and is now a King of Soul in the Queen City.

“Whenever you can bring elite musicians together, there’s magic that can happen. Being with the orchestra ... the people are going to walk away wanting to dance, wanting to sing, all of that,” he said.

As the Charlotte Symphony celebrates 90 years and continues to work to bridge gaps in access and diversity, Lynche says music can do just that.

“Music is a common language for us all. It’s the best way to connect God to the universe, etc. It’s about that heart,” he said.
