Showing animals at the fair is an annual event

One contest winner says she's been showing animals since she was 2

The Carolina Classic Fair lasts until Sunday

One show in particular is the Junior Commercial Ewe show, where high school and younger kids show off female baby lambs. One contestant has been showing lambs since she was 2 years old.

Abilene Armstrong, 7, says it takes a lot to get your animal together to present to the judges.

“So, first you get it out of the stall, second, you rinse it off and then you get the soap and scrub it all over it and then you rinse off. Then it goes up to the stand and gets sheered, and then you put a sheep shirt on it. Sheeps have shirts too and then you put them back in the stall, and then you show them,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong takes after her parents, who started showing sheep when they were in high school, and she learned her skills from her mom Jessica.

"Mommy ... she’s great at washing lambs. I’m like not as half as good as her," Abilene Armstrong said.

When it comes to sheering, it’s harmless to the animal.

"So, this is no different from a man getting his head shaved. So, it doesn’t hurt at all. It would feel no different from you getting your hair cut,” Jessica Armstrong said.

Armstrong says they have close to 20 lambs at the fair. Abilene Armstrong and her brother show five, the rest go to other kids in the show. Jessica Armstrong says showing sheep has a lot of benefits for kids.

"They get to learn how to take care of the animal and learn responsibility. They earn money for the places they get, they earn ribbons, banners and they earn friendships too. Because at these shows we go to, we see a lot of the same kids, and they pitch in to help one another, and they see each other at every fair, and they can go out and ride the rides together," Armstrong said.

In the competition Abilene Armstrong won fourth place in two showings with her favorite lamb Sunny and her other lamb Willow.
