CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte nonprofit is working to help young girls say goodbye to low self-esteem and hello to confidence and success.

Organizations, groups and agencies can reach out to “Pretty Ponytails” through its interactive website to make specific requests for haircare items and other products catered to young girls and beauty. 

Glenisha Thomas started the foundation two years ago. Her family experienced homelessness when they first moved to North Carolina from California, and that hardship motivated her to give back.

As a young girl, Thomas says she struggled with self-esteem and confidence. Now as an adult, she recognizes the importance of self-worth.

Thomas has been able to help more than 200 young girls in the Charlotte area and is hoping to spread her mission internationally.

Thomas explained, “Making them feel beautiful inside and out. Making them feel good about their confidence, their self esteem, their self value and worth.”

“Pretty Ponytails” is now preparing for its 2-year anniversary, where Thomas will host a makeover event for 50 girls at the Aveda Institute. The girls will be able to get their hair done while listening and interacting with motivational speakers.

"The way you care about yourself, take care of yourself, it reflects how you operate and how you go about your daily lives," Thomas said.
