WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — Wake Technical Community College recently announced it's donating six acres of land to Wake County for the purpose of creating an affordable housing complex.

The complex will consist of one, two and three-bedroom units and will be built across the street from Wake Tech’s Public Safety Education Campus on Chapanoke Road in Raleigh.

Thirty percent of the units will be set aside for Wake Tech students who meet specified criteria, and the rest will be available to help with the city’s affordable housing crisis. 

A survey completed in 2020 showed that during the year, 48% of students experienced some form of housing insecurity, and 14% identified as being homeless.

“Our college is taking significant steps to address life challenges for our students, now more than ever,” said Wake Tech President Dr. Scott Ralls. “We’re helping to address food insecurity with our campus food pantries and grocery store gift cards, we’re addressing transportation insecurity with cards for free bus rides, and now we’re addressing housing insecurity by offering our students the opportunity for affordable housing.”

The next step for the county is to issue a request for proposals to secure a developer. The timeline for completing the proposal process is the end of 2021.
