Lake Wylie, S.C. — For the last three years, Erin MacNab has been working on a pretty big project.

“I really wanted to use my creativity and something I loved to participate in the community,” she said.

She feel in love with reading in her 30s and decided to buy the bus. She says it was during a rough time in her life, but reading became her retreat.

What You Need To Know

  • In 2017 Erin MacNab founded a nonprofit called The Kind Bus

  • MacNab bought the bus three years ago and since then has been renovating it

  • This fall, the Clover High School engineering department plans to build a kitchenette and more storage space for the inside of her bus

In 2017 she created a nonprofit called The Kind Bus. Her goal was to bring books out to kids and adults.

“I want it to be very interactive and fun so it’ll be like a super creative, awesome space,” said MacNab.

Everyone from dad to friends have all jumped in to help.

“Before it was painted [people] were like 'I think someone abandoned a bus back there, and I was like nah y’all, you just got to wait,'” said Mary Kate Usina.

Usina learned about The Kind Bus last year and knew she had to help.

“I have extensively researched van life, bus life, all the things and now it's a book mobile. I just think that’s awesome,” she said.

MacNab plans to roll the bus out officially around Charlotte and parts of South Carolina this summer. She hopes it will get more people reading and believes her bus will serve as a reminder that anyone can turn their dreams into a reality.

“You can take an idea that you love or something that you love and use it for something good and inspire other people,” said MacNab. “I’m hoping to inspire people with maybe not only just reading but embracing your creativity.”

MacNab says the Clover High School engineering department will help build a small kitchenette, and storage space for the inside of her bus.
