CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After adding more bike lanes through Uptown and construction on a 26-mile trail taking place in May, Charlotte is slowly growing into a more bike-friendly city.
What You Need to Know
The pop-up bike park will take place at Cordelia Park, on 600 E. 24th Street in Charlotte
It will be up until Sunday
There will be two separate trails: one for beginners and one for intermediate riders
Feedback will be collected from the one-week project and then given to the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department to support future unpaved trails around the County
One thing is missing though — a bike park.
The city currently doesn’t have one, but it recently added a temporary one for residents to check out.
Anna Benton and her two children have waited a year and a half to finally experience the city’s first pop-up bike park at Cordelia Park.
“Like anybody, you want to have opportunities for your kids to be kids close to you, and this is a small part of activating that for families,” she said.
Benton’s children got the knack for riding pretty early on.
“They both started riding peddle bikes at three,” she said.
But with no bike park in the city, her family usually has to pack up and travel if they want to ride.
“For mountain biking we go to Lake Norman, and there’s some stuff near Davidson and the White Water Center,” Benton said.
After the pandemic shut down their initial plan last year, Kate Cavazza was finally able to help launch this temporary pop-up bike park.
“It’s so exciting to see it actually in person, and even better it's exciting to see families and kids learn how to ride a mountain bike trail in an urban environment,” she said.
Cavazza works for the Mecklenburg County Health Department, and with assistance from the city of Charlotte she’s collecting feedback to hopefully create a bike park in the future.
“The more energy we can put behind this, the more of a community experience we can provide through Mecklenburg County Public Health, through the Charlotte Department of Transportation, (and) the more bicycle education features we can really get out there in the community,” she said.
This bike park won’t be up for long, but it's a start to creating something Benton knows will benefit her children and others looking to ride.
“For all the questions we have about equity and sustainability, and all of those things are answered by having more access to safe bicycle routes (and) pedestrian routes,” she said.
The Bike Park is located at Cordelia Park on 600 East 24th Street in Charlotte.
This pop-up bike park currently features two temporary bike trails for beginner and intermediate riders.
It will be open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday.
