RALEIGH, N.C. — A dad-daughter duo in Raleigh just released a new book they wrote together. It's called "The Unexpected Journey: Fire and Gold."
Haelee Moone and her dad, Dedrick, talk about their struggles with bullying while she was in elementary school.
"I was like, suicidal...and I lost my trust in a lot of people," Moone said. "Not only in the school system, but in like losing my faith in humanity from like a younger age.”
Moone says a fellow student sexually assaulted and bullied her when she was six.
The new book discusses how hard it was for them to get justice in the legal system. Because of that experience, Moone wants to become a lawyer.
"I want to be that one lawyer to like help somebody who couldn't really get help and was bound to not get help because of the justice system," she said.
Moone's first book, "The Rules of a Big Boss: A Book of Self-Love," also helps guide children and adults on a path back to self-esteem and healing.
According to Stopbullying.gov, one out of every five students reports being bullied. For resources on how to identify bullying and how you can help, click here.
