Homeowners Corky and Kathy Loftin say they were at home one Saturday night when they heard a loud noise.

“I was sitting here watching television and I heard a terrible racket,” Corky Loftin said. “I thought it was a tree so I walked outside.”

Loftin searched his yard and didn’t see any down trees. Then, his dog, Jody, started barking inside.

“The pup was staring down the hall, looking at me, staring down the hall, looking at me and I thought, 'what the heck?'” Loftin said.

Loftin followed his dog down the hall to their bedroom. That is where he and his wife discovered the shattered glass.

“The door that blew was stationary, Loftin said. “It was the same size as this glass door next to it.”

The Loftin’s say luckily, neither of them were hurt, but it was a lot to clean up. Kathy Loftin said they spend hours getting all the pieces off the bathroom floor and the carpet in their bedroom.

“It was so heavy I couldn't bring it all out, he had to pick it up,” Kathy Loftin said.

The couple wondered why this happened and decided to do some research. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commissionfrom 2012 to 2016 there were 2,300 emergency department visits due to shattered glass doors.

The spontaneous breakage can be caused by scratches, installation error and other factors. The homeowners said their shower was installed by a licensed professional and the shower warranty didn’t mention anything about the door spontaneously shattering.

“It makes me wonder why there has been nothing done nationally,” Loftin said. “If you’re the person in the shower when it blows, it only takes one person.”

Loftin said they had a contractor come look at the broken shower glass door to give an estimate on how much it will cost to fix. The contractor said he wasn’t sure what caused it, but recommended they install a film that will cover the door. This would prevent it from shattering into pieces.
