RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina Trooper Association Caisson Unit will assist in the funeral services for the fallen deputies in Watauga County Thursday. The team aims to provide services free of charge to any fallen law enforcement officer anywhere in North Carolina as well as the surrounding states.
On Monday, the unit gathered in Goldsboro to make sure everything is in place for the seven-hour drive to western North Carolina.
“We’re grateful. We are all here today, no matter how much work we have to put into this thing,” said Bennie Grady, who leads the NCTA Caisson Unit. “Those two that paid the ultimate price for protecting our communities, any little bit of work we have to do is nothing compared to the price that was just paid,” he added.
The NCTA Caisson unit runs completely on donations as they receive no money from the state. Grady says they want to be able to always assist when they get a phone call about a fallen hero.
“The ultimate goal is to pay respect to these families, these departments that are suffering this loss and for us to be able to come in and give these who have given everything the highest honor we can possibly, it takes everybody and that mission mentality to come together and that’s what we do,” Grady said.
