PASQUOTANK COUNTY, N.C. — After a week of remote learning, some parents are hopeful schools open back up next week.
Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Schools shifted to remote learning all week due to "the continuously evolving state of civil unrest in our local community," according to the school systems website.
This closure comes after Andrew Brown Jr. was shot and killed by Pasquotank Sheriff's Office deputies on April 21 while serving a warrant. Lack of transparency from law enforcement on what happened that day has lead to days of protests and demonstrations.
Some parents say they are ready to be back in the building.
"It's unfortunate things have to happen this way because of the fact they're missing out on their education, and we just hope that they can go back to school and get that learning that they need," said one mom.
Another parent wasn't sure why schools were closed since protests have largely in the evenings and peaceful.
Tammy Sawyer, Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Public Schools Public Information Officer, says a decision about next week has not been made yet. Sawyer says they will consult local law enforcement and community partners before making a decision.
