LANCASTER, S.C. — The weather is getting warmer, which means more people are going to be spending time outside. Picking your own strawberries at Hall Family Farm is a tradition for many families.
This year, the farm is opening in a new location. The Hall family sold their Charlotte farm in 2019 and moved to Lancaster, South Carolina. Lara Hall, the owner's wife, says the rising cost of land in Charlotte leads the family to move over the border.
“Land is so expensive now; there’s no way we could have stayed in the Charlotte area. It just wasn’t feasible,” Hall said.
The family purchased the land in Lancaster in 2016 and has worked on preparing the farm for guests ever since.
“We would operate a season at the other location, come out here in the summer, gear up for the fall, close down and come back out here in the wintertime,” Hall added.
The family closed the Charlotte location in 2019 to focus on the new business, but Hall says the coronavirus pandemic through a wrench into some of their plans.
“We decided instead of buying lumber; we were going to cut down trees and make our own lumber. At that point, we were not expecting the material cost to go up like they did, or to have the shortages that have been occurring,” she said.
April 20 is the opening day for the farm, and the family is ready to welcome in old and new visitors to make new memories.
“I do miss seeing the kids have fun, the families having fun, things like that, doing family get-togethers,” Hall said.
The farm is open Sunday, Tuesday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
