WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. Thom Tillis is labeling the surge of migrants at the U.S.-Mexican border a “humanitarian and security crisis.”

Tillis was in Texas late last week with other Republican senators. They toured the border, met with patrol agents, and went inside a facility housing migrants, according to his office.

The Biden administration has reversed a handful of Trump era immigration policies. While the White House is still turning away most adults, they are allowing many teens and children to stay at least temporarily.

Tillis blasted the Biden White House, saying policies are needed to “secure” the border.

“Two-year-old and three-year-old children sitting on a bench unaccompanied. They call them playpens, but they were actually holding areas for little babies,” he said. “We have a crisis at the border.”

President Joe BIden has called the conditions for kids unacceptable, though he has pointed the finger of blame in part at the Trump administration, arguing they dismantled systems that helped manage the flow of migrants.

Pressed on the situation at the border, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Monday that the Biden administration is working to “put in place steps and actions to help address the situation at the border, including expediting processing and opening up additional shelters.”

The current situation at the border could once again stymie the chances of something that has long proved elusive for lawmakers: comprehensive immigration reforms. Tillis told reporters during his border visit that “you cannot possibly have a credible immigration reform proposal in Congress until you fix this crisis down here.”
