DURHAM, N.C. — When bad weather hits, Durham Rescue Mission wants to make sure everyone has a warm, safe place to sleep and eat.
On Wednesday Operation Rescue: Warm Shelter was activated to help get homeless off the streets and somewhere safe.
Because of COVID-19 restrictions some people staying with them are sleeping on the floor.
Chief Operating Officer Rob Tart says he thinks some people are willing to brave the elements in fear of getting sick, but he wants people to know it's safe to stay.
"Our objective this year is to put out the word that we are doing everything we can to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible.” Tart says.
Clients at the shelters are regularly tested for COVID-19, and Tart says right now there are no cases.
“They can come! We are going to take care of them. They may be sleeping in the floor, but we are going to keep them warm and dry." Tart adds.
