HIGH POINT, N.C. — Police say two people are dead and three officers are recovering from injuries after an overnight standoff.

At a news conference, High Point Police Chief Travis Stroud said the suspect, identified as Josue Drumond-Cruz, 34, was shot and killed around 10:15 Friday morning when officers returned fire. Upon entering the home, a woman was also found dead inside but details on her death have not been released.

Three officers were injured around 3:30 a.m. when authorities say Drumond-Cruz, who was barricaded inside the home, fired on them as they tried to breach the door.

The officers suffered various injuries including wounds to the leg, shoulder, and hand. All were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and are expected to recover.

The incident started shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday when officers responded to a shots fired call at a home on English Road. Officials say Drumond-Cruz, who was on the porch when they arrived, went inside and retrieved a rifle.

After barricading himself inside the home, police say they spent several hours trying to negotiate but attempts were not successful. 

Officials say there was consistent gunfire coming from inside the home throughout the morning following the shooting that injured the three officers. 

Drumond-Cruz was killed in a shootout shortly after 10 a.m.

Two children were also reportedly found inside the home. They were not injured during the incident, and have been transported to the Family Justice Center.

The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation. No further information has been released at this time.
