JONES COUNTY, N.C. — Hurricane Florence passed through North Carolina over two years ago, but some residents are still dealing with the aftermath.
Sherryl Kinsey was living with a damaged roof and holes in her floor until Habitat for Humanity came to the rescue in November. They teamed up with Americorps volunteers to get Kinsey the critical repairs she has been waiting for.
“You don't know what it felt like to see that truck driving in that yard Monday morning,” Kinsey said. “I was like God. And it started, the tears just couldn't hold back. And I just started praising the Lord for being so good.”
Kinsey is one of the lucky ones but many others are still waiting for their turn.
After Florence passed through, over 74,000 structures were left flooded, leaving many people with expensive damages or even no home at all. FEMA provided free housing to over 600 households.
A couple months ago, North Carolina finally got an action plan approved for more federal funding and disaster recovery. They are the first state to get their action plan approved since Hurricane Florence.
