CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As the flu season collides with COVID-19, a North Carolina based medical company has created a test to fight back.
What You Need To Know
- Created by Mako Medical, the test is called COVFLU-19
- The single swab test checks for three potential viral infections
- Company says tests results are available within 24-hours
Mako Medical has created a test called COVFLU-19, which is a single swab test that will check patients for influenza A and B and COVID-19. The company says patients can get their results within 24-hours.
They say they wanted to give patients an option for a quick, thorough test.
COVFLU-19 has already been made available to various doctors offices, sports teams, and nursing homes throughout the country, and Mako Medical Chief Operating Officer Josh Arant says the test is affordable for most.
“Just like a COVID-19 test, there are no out-of-cost deductibles. So, if patients are symptomatic and they need to understand if they have COVID or the flu, insurance is covering the test,” Arant said.
Kara Konrad has been tested for COVID-19 and the flu five times each since March. She says the test is something she can get behind.
“I love the idea of fewer things getting shoved up my nose, so that makes me happy and the fact that it's rapid,” Konrad said.
Mako Medical is based in Raleigh, and it's constantly hiring people to keep up with the demand.
Officials say they’re currently able to process 20,000 test daily.
