The University Soup Kitchen is a nonprofit in Charlotte that holds meal giveaways, delivers meals, provides soup kitchen Sundays at 700 N Tryon St.

“I was born and raised in Charlotte and to be honest, this is one of the neighborhoods where I have not seen a lot of things done like this, especially this time of year,” University Soup Kitchen Founder Joshua Bridges says.

But they need food and other donations in order to keep all their events going.

“With the increase in demand, we have pretty much been depleted in our pantry,” Bridges says.

Beverly McHan is a grandmother and the legal guardian for her grandaughter Jamiracle. For her, the donated food makes a big difference. She was at a meal giveaway on Nov. 19.

“There are a lot of homeless folks out here and they are struggling. So this is a blessing tonight,” McHan says.

Bridges says COVID-19 and the holiday season has caused an increase in demand. They are also seeking volunteers for future events.

“We just want to show people that we really care and that despite the economy and despite the pandemic, you can be out here making a difference,” Bridges says.
