BOONE, N.C. – The Turkey Trot in Boone has been a tradition for many for 10 years but this year, due to COVID-19, the event is going virtual.
The 5K run is normally held on the greenway, but now participants can run in their own backyards. After signing up, runners will have a shirt and bib sent to their homes, and will be given a week where they can do the run and post a picture on Facebook.
Director of Development Todd Carter says the fundraiser is essential to the Hospitality House of Northwest North Carolina as they normally bring in $30,000. This year, they have been giving out 49% more food and their food-cost has increased by 176%.
With shelters about to become busy this winter, they need donations now more than ever.
"These funds are critical to supporting that because we get no funding for winter shelter, no government grant, no nothing, it's just something we do to keep people safe," Carter says.
He says they will have events on many social media platforms, like their TikTok turkey-dance competition.
