DURHAM, N.C. – In January of this year, Durham Tech launched its very first Natural Hair Care Course.
Students learn how to braid, lock, twist, and wrap natural hair.
“We started off with 10 students,” said program director Maria Steele. “We graduated 10 and already nine out of 10 are licensed in the state. We are very grateful that the program is here at Durham Tech and is doing very well.”
Coursework moved online during the pandemic, but Steele says the hard work of the graduates is already paying off.
“Especially during COVID-19, when many people are losing their jobs, they are actually starting their own business and doing very well,” Steele said.
Mia Wilson is a graduate of the program and recently launched her own business Knot Just Locs. After a decade working with kids, she decided to take the course and change the course of her career.
“I learned a lot about me, “Wilson said, “having patience, having to start over to do what I wanted to do. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.”
