WILMINGTON, N.C. — The film The Glorias depicts the life of women's rights activist Gloria Steinem. And acting as one of her allies, Allie McCulloch is playing Brenda Fiegen.

“She came up the ranks with Gloria and Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Flo Kennedy and she was one of the co-founders for Ms. magazine with Gloria,” McCulloch says.

The film illustrates a time when Steinem took a major role in the women's liberation movement back in the 1960s. It was a movement working to make women more visible and powerful.

"It's historic. She has never had a film about her, she is 86 years old, she has been one of the leaders of feminist rights for 50 years," says Nick Basta, an actor in The Glorias.

With the film being shot from Georgia to Wilmington to India, McCulloch says being a part of such an inspiring story was a once in a lifetime experience.

“I’ve been acting for a very long time and this by far the most important piece of work I’ve ever been a part of. I knew it when I read the lines to audition for it,” she says.

Basta says growing up with such strong female role models helped shape his views on the feminist movement, and he was more than excited to play someone who helped Steinem in her career.

"His character was sort of an advocate for Gloria. He kind of pushed her, urged her to continue fighting and do the pieces that she wanted to do. He is actually a really important part of her," McCulloch says.

"I got to meet Gloria Steinem at Sundance last January, and she was a hero of my mother's. So I became a hero of my mom's," Basta says.

And as the movie celebrated diversity, McCulloch says she believes that the film couldn't have come at a better time.

"I think the whole film is a exploration of all women that came up in this time, and women in general, even though it's about Gloria Stienem and her life through her ages. It's about our country, it's about all women," McCulloch says.

Basta says it is important for the film to come out during the election year, as the fight over women's rights and reproductive rights is reignited.
