DALLAS, N.C. — If you've ever wanted to own a historic jail, now is your chance.
The Historic Dallas Jail just went on the market, with an asking price of $125,000.
Built in 1846, the building still has its original jail doors and barred windows.
When the county seat moved to Gastonia in 1911 the building became a family home. Since then, it has also served as a restaurant, western clothing store, and the headquarters to a civic club.
The Gaston County Museum owned it in the 90's and hoped to restore it. Other priorities however, took place and now it's for sale.
Museum Director Jason Luker says with help from Preservation North Carolina, the sale will be made with conditions.
"The buyer cannot tear the building down, and the hopes are to preserve the building, keeping its historical value, but it can become whatever the buyer intends. A house, a bed and breakfast, a restaurant, a business office, but they must preserve the building," Luker says.
The next owner would also be eligible for a 50 percent property tax deferral as well as state and federal historic tax credits.
