RALEIGH, N.C. – Some college students across North Carolina do not have the option of healthy food readily available.

A Duke University study found that choices are limited around N.C.’s 10 Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or “HBCUs”. The study also found that the HBCUs don’t have healthy options within a 5-mile, 15-minute walk or drive.

Landon Bishop, a student at Saint Augustine University, found the study to be true.

“We have to go out hunting, we always have to go a step above, just to get some”, Bishop says.

Bishop says that although college students aren’t known for their healthy eating, he tries to avoid fast food. He also says that healthy options are not always budget friendly for students.

Other students say the two elements that are the major difference between predominantly White institutions and HBCUs are money and transportation.

Bishop says this conversation has been taking place by Black students for years and the next important lesson is what is going to be done to change the environment.
