CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After months of waiting, the Charlotte Major League Soccer franchise finally has a name.

The team will be called Charlotte FC, which is short for Charlotte Football Club. While the name, logo, and colors are now set and already adorn the entrance to Bank of America Stadium, players won't take to the pitch until 2022.

The coronavirus pandemic is part of the reason league and team officials decided to push back the start date by a full season. Despite the delay however, officials say club operations will continue to move forward in preparation for the 2022 debut.

In a statement released last week, Tom Glick, President of Tepper Sports & Entertainment, said there was a lot of discussion about the move and felt confident it is in the best interest of the club and supporters to take the additional time to ensure a successful launch.

“When we were awarded the team in December, we knew we were on an extremely tight timeline to begin play in 2021, but we were ready to meet that challenge. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted several of our essential initiatives. We have made huge progress in the last few months but having additional time to build is important,” Glick said.

But that delay isn't stopping fans from getting excited about the Queen City's newest team.

The team's owner, David Tepper also said in a statement, “The party’s still on! We are just delaying it a bit to ensure we have the best experience for our fans when we do start playing.”
