CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A group in Charlotte came together Saturday to help families in desperate need of computers for the upcoming school year.

Todd Peterson works with the nonprofit MakerSpace in Charlotte to repair computers and give them away for free.

“The focus today is primarily for the children because CMS just announced they will be online for quite a bit,” Peterson said.

Beatriz Gomez and her kids were one of many families to receive computers.

“It is a huge help for family members who don’t have the ability to have a computer for every single student,” Gomez said. “They don’t have to share, skip classes, or miss anything.”

Since the start of the coronavirus, families say it has been tough due to classes going online. It's why Peterson wanted to help out.

“I want to make sure as many kids as possible can stream and continue to learn,” Peterson said.
