BOONE, N.C. -- Dorms at Appalachian State University will soon be getting a name change.

What You Need To Know

  • Dorms with controversial names will get a name change soon.

  • A petition was sent around about Lovill and Hoey Halls.

  • More than 2500 people signed the petition.

  • The university says it will be changing many dorm names soon.

Lovill and Hoey resident halls were the topic of a recent petition being passed around after a senior at the university said they signified values that were not the same as the university's.

Senior Winn Williams says he felt the names were uninviting and made people uncomfortable.

On Friday night, the Board of Trustees voted to approve the name change. Williams says he is happy people are now thinking about these names and discussing them.

"The first year I was on campus they gave out stickers that said, 'No Hate App State', and there are all these things about diversity and inclusion yet there were buildings there to remember and honor these men that were very much not with the message the university was sending," Williams said.

The university says these two dorms, along with several others, will see a name change soon. The student affairs building naming committee will be meeting next week to discuss options.
