ASHE COUNTY, N.C. – A humane society in Ashe County is working to get pet food to as many people as possible during this difficult time.

What You Need To Know

  • Ashe County Humane Society is teaming up with the ASPCA to give out free pet food

  • A large truck filled with food will be heading to the county to distribute food to anyone who needs it, including those living in surrounding counties

  • The humane society has seen an increase in people asking for help due to COVID-19

Board of Directors president Sarah Terry says over the past few months the amount of calls they have received has increased.

The Ashe Humane Society does have a food pantry based on donations, but it is not enough. It has also seen a number of people surrender their animals due to COVID.

Terry is hoping to bridge the gap and be able to help as many families as possible so they are able to keep their animals.

The humane society is now teaming up with the ASPCA to bring a truck load of food to the area to distribute on Monday.

"When someone has to rehome an animal, it puts strain on our whole animal rescue system here, so whether they surrender to us or animal control that's yet another home we have to find for a pet," Terry says.

Anyone from Ashe and surrounding counties can pick up the pet food at the old Lowe's Food location across from Skyline National Bank on Mt. Jefferson Road in West Jefferson on Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
