CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. -- For nearly three years, many of the residents in the Point East neighborhood in Grays Creek have been using gallons of bottled water. That’s because there’s questions about how safe the water in their private wells is.
Potentially unhealthy levels of the chemical GenX have been found in some of those wells.
Back in September of 2017, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality began an investigation of the Chemours Fayetteville Works Plant. It revealed the plant had been discharging GenX into the air and the Cape Fear River.
That is no longer happening.
A recent study by N.C. State that tested 84 private wells near the Chemours plant found traces of GenX in 70 of them. Of that 70, 33 of the wells had more of the chemical than the state considers safe.
Many of the residents whose wells have been impacted by this have filed a lawsuit against Chemours and its parent company, DuPont.
We attempted to contact Chemours for a comment, but no one was available.
