UNION COUNTY, N.C. – An officer involved shooting in Waxhaw has led to one man being shot by a deputy.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office says the shooting happened after a disturbance on New Town Road by Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Police say a man was cursing at church members during an outdoor service this morning.

“He was screaming 'GD' and ‘F you' at the top of his voice,” church member Rose Turick says. “And I thought nobody gets that upset because they got woke up you know?”

Officers were dispatched to the scene. When they arrived the man had walked back to his home, which was across the street.

“They attempted to engage him in conversation and a struggle ensued,” Union County Sheriff’s Office chief of communications Tony Underwood says. “The man was armed with a knife. The first deputy on scene physically fought with the deputy and attempted to take him into custody."

Underwood said a deputy fired his taser, but that didn’t work. Deputies then opened fire and struck the man. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No church members were injured during the incident.

“I was so worried so I am glad. I’m glad everyone is ok,” Turick says.

As standard protocol, The North Carolina Bureau of Investigation will conduct a criminal investigation into the shooting.
