BOONE, N.C. -- With temperatures in the 60's in the mountains, people headed to the lakes for the first day of trout fishing. Some areas like Julian Price Lake were crowded, but everyone did their part to social distance. Some were on canoes or kayaks, while others were just keeping a safe distance.

Blue Ridge Parkway staff say there is another way to ensure you are far enough and that is to ensure you are atleast a fishing pole length away.

Those at the lake said they were thankful to be outdoors enjoying the weather.

"I'm not getting no where near that close, my fishing pole ain't but five and a half feet, they tell me six. I'm staying 20," said Lenoir resident Chad Pearson.

Restrooms, picnics, and campgrounds have been closed down on the parkway due to coronavirus concerns.

Parkway staff ask if you pull up to a lake that is crowded that you find another one to go to in order to keep numbers down.
