CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One funeral home is striving to work with families of homicide victims, no matter the cost.

Tito Truesdale opened House of Rosadale Funeral Parlor on Central Avenue in Charlotte 12 years ago. He says in the last year and a half it's been busy, but not in a good way.

"At House of Rosadale Funeral we do about 75 percent of the homicides," Truesdale said.

So far in 2020, there have been 16 homicides in the city of Charlotte. It's down from where we were at this time last year. In 2019, Charlotte saw it's highest homicide rate since 1993.

Truesdale believes they see more families of homicide than other funeral homes because they have a policy to never turn people away, even if they can’t pay.

"We try to have some solution for them to have a nice decent memory of their loved one, whether it be memorial service, a funeral service, or a cremation," Truesdale said.

Trusedale says one of the toughest things for these families to deal with is the unexpected financial burden. A professional funeral at House of Rosadale usually starts at $7,800. That is not including the cemetery service.

"For a cemetery service, we are talking anywhere from $1,700 all the up to $5,000," Truesdale said.

Truesdale says some funeral services can be tough on him and his staff.

"We have some come through the funeral home and their son is the same age as my son or my daughter," Truesdale said.

But the worst is when he has to organize a funeral for someone he knows personally. Right now, Truesdale is helping put together the funeral service for 22-year-old Rodarius Meaders. Police say Meaders was shot and killed inside an apartment Wednesday.

"We just have to show each other love," Truesdale said. "We have to have the community leaders, community centers, churches, we have to have the funeral home...we have to have all businesses step up."
