CHADBOURN, N.C. — A Chadbourn Police Officer suffered serious injuries Wednesday morning after crashing into a vehicle, then a building.
The accident happened shortly after 8 a.m. at the intersection of South Brown Street and Railroad Street. Chadbourn Police Chief Anthony Spivey says the officer was responding to a call for assistance at a nearby traffic stop.
According to Spivey, the officer had his blue lights and siren activated when he entered the intersection and a silver SUV pulled out into his path from a stop sign.
After colliding with the side of the SUV, officials say the officer's vehicle crossed the railroad tracks and crashed into a building on South Brown Street.
The SUV overturned from the collision, but the two people inside suffered only minor injuries, police say.
The officer was transported to Columbus Regional with serious injuries, Spivey says, but is expected to recover. Spivey says a backhoe had to be used to lift the roof of the building off of the officer's vehicle so it could be freed.
The Chadbourn officer has reportedly been with the department for a little more than two years.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
