MORRISVILLE, N.C. — Some travelers are wearing masks to protect themselves against the coronavirus at Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

"We are taking precautions because I have three children that are home and this is something serious," Brenda Cornejo says.

Her relatives and she wore masks at Terminal 2 before some of them departed for Peru Wednesday morning.

Medical experts say the masks aren't necessary unless you have the virus. However, some people aren't taking any chances.

"My immune system is low so I just want to take extra precautions," Cornejo's sister, Margarita Rogan says.

Airport officials say late last week, a male passenger returned from the state of Washington, where there's an outbreak. This week, Wake County health officials said that passenger came down with the virus. They also said the man didn't have symptoms while traveling and don't believe other passengers are at risk.

Airport officials say they'll continue to clean and disinfect the building and bathrooms to prevent any spread of the virus.
