ALAMANCE COUNTY, NC —- A national organization called Mijente, also known for being one of the only Latino organizations to endorse Bernie Sanders, is canvassing in Alamance County.
Members of Mijente from all across North Carolina met on Saturday morning to practice canvassing. They are endorsing a local Alamance County Commission candidate, Dreama Caldwell. She is the first ever black woman to run for this position in Alamance County. Arianna Genis with Mijente told us, Dreama stands for all of their same values.
“She’s someone who’s from the community, she’s someone who’s been impacted by the criminal justice system, who’s been in affordable housing, who’s fighting for affordable housing, is also a brave candidate that’s talking about immigration and standing with immigrants,” Genis said.
First time voters like Sary Guerra told us that it’s important for everyone to go out and cast their vote.
Their goal is to get at least 400 Latino voters out for Super Tuesday. They hope by doing this they can see some change.
“Mijente has a membership here that care about this issue want to show up for our people and are showing up to say we will do our scripts in English and Spanish, we will also do this trainings and we will partner up and hit the doors together to make our voices heard,” Genis explained.
Caldwell is the first candidate Mijente has endorsed in North Carolina.
