WILMINGTON, N.C. — Support the Port Foundation, Inc. is teaching black history with a local activity book.

Founder Cedric Harrison has made two volumes of the book. The second copy features African Americans who have made an impact on the Wilmington community and beyond. Harrison said these are figures he never learned about while growing up in Wilmington, and he doesn't want the same for this generation.

"It lets me know that we're filling the gap that I was intentionally trying to fill," said Harrison.

For Black History Month, he has been visiting elementary and middle schools teaching from his book.

"As I go to these different schools and I say, 'Alright whose heard of Robert Taylor?' you know, and it's like crickets. And its like, we all should know this guy," said Harrison.

Robert Taylor (1868-1942) was from Wilmington, and the first African American architect to graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The activity book features stories like Robert Taylor, coloring, a word search, and a glossary of empowerment.

Harrison said this is just a jumping off point, and he plans to work with schools to do more activities like this one.

"I love the attention that we get during Black History Month," said Harrison. "But, black history is 365, and the schools should reflect that too."
