GREENSBORO, N.C. — The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has partnered with Youth Focus and Act Together to create Safe Place sites all across campus.

  • Bright yellow signs designate safe place sites
  • Youth Focus taught students, staff, and faculty the proper procedure for what to do when a minor comes to the safe place for help
  • There is also a texting service where youth can send their location to find the nearest safe site

Dozens of bright yellow signs have been placed across campus to designate a Safe Place site or a place where kids and teens can go if they need assistance or shelter. Some of these places include the UNCG Police Department, The Middle College of UNCG, and on all Chariot buses.

Police Chief Paul Lester says these sites have already been helpful.

“When they closed the schools early last month for the middle college, a couple of students missed the bus and needed a place to go. They actually stayed here in the lobby of the police department as part of our Safe Place program and waited for their parents to pick them up,” Lester said.

Youth Focus came out and taught students, staff, and faculty the proper procedure for what to do if a minor comes to the safe space for help. Safe Place is a national program.

There is also a texting service youth can use to send their location and find a Safe Place location near them. They can text “safe” to 4-HELP.
