The new location increased the number of books by 20 percent. It also has a community room, a dedicated children’s program room, new spaces for children and teens, and more computers.

Mecklenburg County Commissioner for District 5, Susan Harden is excited the community will have additional space and amenities.

“We know that our South End is growing and lots of people are moving to this community and so we need space for the community gather so students come here and study so that we can have storytime with young children. We just need more room so that we can serve this growing community,” Harden said.

At the new library, people can also enjoy a quiet room, five group study rooms, and a laptop bar for those with their own computers.

Library patrons like Devki Wright are looking forward to having this learning environment close to home.

“The space has been activated and a lot has gone into thinking this one through and improving it, so I definitely see us coming here more often,” Wright said.

The project, made possible with public funding, cost $1.7 million dollars.
