CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new poll from Gallup found adults in the U.S. took an average of 10 and a half visits to the library last year.

That's almost twice the number of times people went to the movie theater. It's also more than a live sporting event, live concert, casino, or amusement park.

But the library isn’t just popular for books. There is storytime for kids, job help programs, and book clubs. It’s also a chance to interact with people.

“I understand with the climate of the world the way it is now and the need to be connected to human beings is very important,” says library visitor Kim Alexander.

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Library says while digital reading is growing, the physical book still reigns supreme.

Charlotte is building a new main library. The current facility is set to close for construction early next year and is expected to re-open in 2024.

The library says 68 precent of the new building is funded.
