CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Five o'clock is the time when many people leave the stresses of work for the stresses of the commute.

But for Luciano Rivera, it's when he starts his day job.

Twice daily, during the morning and evening commute times, he steps outside his home and waves at every passing car.

The idea started six months ago near his home after a vehicle accident. He saw how many people were speeding so he decided to wave to get people to slow down.

Six months later, he says there hasn't been accident.

But safety isn't the only goal. More and more drivers wave back.

“Instead of getting smaller it gets bigger and bigger and bigger,” River says. “It's like a monster.”

“People that have talked to me about it have said he makes my day. When I go in the morning, am running around, trying to get ready, off to work, the day starts off bad. as soon as he sees my face and see his hand goes up it calms down. Everything calms down,” says neighbor Wan Marsh.

"Calm" is hard to find now a days but there's something about regularity and simplicity that brings comfort. That's pretty good for a guy just trying to get drivers to ease off the gas.
