MILWAUKEE (SPECTRUM NEWS) - The Milwaukee 2020 Democratic National Convention Host Committee ousted its top two officials Tuesday. The board of directors fired committee president Liz Gilbert and chief of staff Adam Alonso as it investigates allegations by committee staffors of a toxic work environment.
A letter from current and former host committee staffers obtained by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel alleges Alonso bullied and intimidated his coworkers and Gilbert, despite fielding complaints about Alonso, enabled his behavior.
Gilbert and Alonso both joined the Milwaukee 2020 host committee last May after working in New Jersey Democratic politics, including roles in Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration. They were in charge of the committee tasked with raising $70 million as well as recruiting and managing 15,000 DNC volunteers.
Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett, a co-chair of the non-partisan host committee, praised the board of directors for taking swift action to open an investigation. Last Thursday, Barrett lauded Gilbert’s work preparing Milwaukee for the largest political event in its history. Barrett said he would not prejudge the investigation, but expected a quick resolution. The mayor said it would not change the course of DNC planning at all.
“There are several events in the next week that are moving forward,” Barrett said. “The business community has spoken, and they are still obviously very, very supportive of our efforts. There’s a lot of work to do.”
