CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Nevins Center has been providing services for adults with disabilities for 60 years.
The center is celebrating by applying to get North Carolina Historic Site status for a portion of the center, which was the first nonprofit providing day services for people with disabilities in the state.
Today, men and women 16 and older can come to Nevins Center for daily onsite activities, classes from Central Piedmont Community College, and help find employment.
Treana Suggs, 24, has been coming to Nevins Center for five years.
Suggs now rides the bus to and from the center by herself, is taking courses from CPCC, and is looking for a job. Her dad, Tracey Suggs, said the Nevins Center has helped her get there.
“That's what Nevins offers, an opportunity for you to be loved, an opportunity for you to grow, and just a wealth of opportunities for you to develop as an individual,” Tracey Suggs said.
