DAVIDSON, N.C. — Portions of Roosevelt Wilson Park are being restricted after officials say a recent environmental assessment confirmed the presence of asbestos in some areas.

  • Asbestos levels found during a recent environmental assessment at Roosevelt Wilson Park
  • Town is following DHHS recommendations to restrict access to the areas that tested positive
  • All other areas remain open to the public, including the play structures and restrooms

The Town of Davidson released a statement Wednesday saying the sampling data had been sent to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, and they are "following their [DHHS] recommendation to restrict access at the park by installing construction fencing to prevent disturbance of soil in areas where asbestos was detected."

The testing was reportedly done as part of a planned park improvement project.

Officials say all other areas of the park remain open and accessible to the public. This includes the play structure and restrooms.

Town Manager Jamie Justice also said in the statement, “We are committed to doing everything we can to ensure the safety of our community and the much-beloved Roosevelt Wilson Park. We’re working very closely with the proper state agencies to take the necessary next steps.”
